Skin is constantly responding to its environment. In winter, cold outdoor air combined with dry indoor heat can weaken the skin barrier, leading to increased moisture loss, sensitivity, and dullness. This is why winter skincare should focus LESS on exfoliation and more on protection, hydration, and barrier support. Thicker creams, nourishing oils, and humectants help seal in moisture and support the skin’s natural repair processes.
One simple way to support winter skin is by adding a nourishing facial oil to your routine. Oils help slow transepidermal water loss and support elasticity, especially when applied to slightly damp skin. I love applying this mixture below after my shower in the morning, and after I cleanse before bed at night.
A blend that’s great in winter is this below. Grab a glass dropper bottle and add:
-
Equal parts organic castor oil and organic jojoba oil
-
10 drops of organic frankincense essential oil
Jojoba oil closely mimics the skin’s natural sebum, making it deeply hydrating without feeling heavy. It’s so sweet and lovely! Castor oil is rich in fatty acids and supports circulation and moisture retention. Don’t be turned off by it’s stickiness – it goes away! Frankincense has long been used in skincare for its skin-supportive properties and is often associated with promoting a smoother, more resilient complexion. The smell is beautiful and subsides quickly.
This blend can be pressed gently into the skin after cleansing or layered over a hydrating serum to help lock in moisture. (As with any new product, patch testing is always recommended!)
Adapting your skincare routine to the seasons — just like your diet — supports long-term skin health. When we work with the rhythms of nature instead of pushing against them, the skin is better able to maintain balance, strength, and vitality year-round.
