The Grogan household has been under the weather and it hasn’t been fun. Now more than ever is when food is our medicine. We’ve been drinking plenty of water, enjoying chicken soup, we’ve got a big pot of healing kitchari made with bone broth on the stove and we’re sipping on switchel! I usually make switchel in the summer since it’s so refreshing when it’s cold and over ice, but when we’re you’re not feeling well it perks you right up! Here is my recipe for this super simple fermented drink. Sometimes I’ll add it to some Pellegrino to make it more fancy. Right now I’m adding extra turmeric and cayenne pepper to increase the healing effects.
Switchel (or what my kids call “lemonade”)
2 tablespoons raw apple cider vinegar
3 tablespoons raw honey
2-inch piece of fresh ginger root, finely grated (or if you’re lazy, like me, just peel and slice ginger)
4 cups water
½ of a fresh lemon, juiced
dash or two of turmeric (optional)
10 drops Trace Minerals (optional, for trace minerals and electrolytes)
Mix all ingredients in a large mason jar and shake well. Cover with lid and place in refrigerator overnight. Shake well then strain into glass for serving and enjoy!
